Smartphone prices could remain elevated as memory costs reshape the market

Consumers hoping that smartphone prices will quickly return to their old trajectory may be disappointed. Industry forecasts increasingly suggest that memory costs, component supply pressures and softer global shipment volumes could keep handset prices elevated through 2028. Memory is especially important because modern phones require increasing amounts of RAM and storage for high-resolution cameras, on-device AI and increasingly complex software.

Premium manufacturers have enough margin to absorb some cost increases, but budget devices do not. Cheaper phones may therefore ship with less storage, slower components or higher retail prices. The trend has direct consequences for mobile gaming. Developers rely on a constantly improving baseline of affordable Android hardware in markets such as India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa.

If entry-level performance stops advancing as rapidly, publishers will need to preserve low graphics settings and lightweight clients for longer. The renewed interest in enormous batteries and longer software support may partly reflect this environment: when replacement cycles slow, manufacturers need to sell durability and longevity instead of assuming users will upgrade every two years.
