Independent Japanese developer Tatsuya Maeda has introduced the Android edition of GRID REAVER, an unusual combination of hack-and-slash progression, equipment management and asynchronous competitive battles. Although the Android version originally became available on October 7, its release received fresh industry coverage on October 14. The game places players inside the enormous ruins of a fallen civilisation, where they explore dangerous environments and collect increasingly valuable equipment.
Rather than relying entirely on conventional character statistics, GRID REAVER introduces a 6-by-4 equipment grid. Players arrange weapons and other items across this board, with their positioning determining how effectively different abilities interact. Adjacent items can create useful combinations, while equipment placed within particular rows or columns can influence the overall strength of a character build.
Consequently, two players using identical equipment may achieve dramatically different results depending on their arrangements. Combat unfolds automatically, placing greater emphasis on preparation and strategic decisions than rapid touchscreen inputs. The game includes approximately fifty equipment types and five character classes, providing opportunities for experimentation. Individual expeditions generally last between one and two minutes, making the experience suitable for brief mobile gaming sessions.
Asynchronous multiplayer allows players to challenge builds created by other users without requiring both participants to be online simultaneously. GRID REAVER is free to play with optional purchases, although the developer says these purchases do not directly influence equipment strength or competitive outcomes. Versions are also available for iPhone, iPad and browsers. It is an appealing reminder that thoughtful game mechanics can provide considerable depth without requiring spectacular graphics.
Sometimes the most powerful weapon is simply knowing where to put your equipment.
