Dogpile is settling into iOS and Android as one of the more unusual releases of August. Developed by Studio Folly, Toot Games and Foot, the game combines deckbuilding and roguelike progression with an extremely simple central idea: matching dogs can be merged into larger dogs. Individual animals can then receive Traits that alter scoring and create increasingly elaborate combinations over repeated runs.

The concept translates naturally to touchscreens because most interaction revolves around positioning and selection rather than fast virtual controls. Dogpile also arrives during a period when players have shown considerable appetite for games that start with familiar rules and then allow upgrades to bend or break those rules. The challenge for any system-heavy roguelike is readability.

As combinations become more complicated, players need to understand why a particular build is working rather than simply watching numbers grow. Mobile could ultimately become Dogpile's most important platform because its short runs and playful presentation are well suited to spontaneous sessions. It is another example of mobile becoming a destination for inventive indie games instead of primarily free-to-play service titles.
