Retro gaming handheld enthusiasts have received one of the year's most substantial software updates, with the release of MustardOS 2606.0 Andromeda. The new version introduces more than 1,200 documented changes across the operating system, adding features, improving compatibility and expanding support for portable gaming hardware. MustardOS, commonly known as muOS, is a custom firmware solution designed for supported Linux-based retro gaming handhelds.

Andromeda represents a major development milestone following approximately eight months without a new stable release. The update expands compatibility to eighteen devices, including several Anbernic H700-based handhelds, the TrimUI Brick family and the GKD Pixel 2. One of its biggest additions is Pickles, a new integrated Libretro player supporting network play, RetroAchievements, cheats, overlays, colour filters and controller remapping.

Players can also use suspend-and-resume functionality and a detailed performance monitor. Another major addition is Wasabi, an integrated media player supporting music, video, playlists, internet radio and live television streams. The interface receives substantial improvements through faster theme switching, additional display options, improved screensavers and more flexible font settings. Bluetooth support and expanded system-management features further improve everyday usability.

However, existing users should carefully read the installation notes before upgrading. The update changes backup handling and several internal systems, meaning some older configurations may require adjustment. Andromeda is particularly interesting because it demonstrates how community-developed software can significantly extend the usefulness of inexpensive gaming hardware. A handheld does not necessarily need a faster processor to become more enjoyable. Sometimes it simply needs better software.

Apparently the retro gaming community has once again decided that the best way to improve old games is to spend several months rewriting everything around them.
