Samsung Checkout drops Android 4.x support today, closing another chapter of ancient Android

Samsung Checkout is ending support for Android 4.x devices today, August 25, preventing Galaxy Store purchases on phones and tablets permanently stuck on those versions. Android 4.x spans devices from an era when smartphone hardware, security standards and payment infrastructure were dramatically different from today's ecosystem, so continued transaction support had become increasingly difficult to justify.

The cutoff is nevertheless a reminder that digital storefront functionality can disappear long before hardware physically stops working. Some older Galaxy devices may still boot, run installed applications and function as media players, yet losing account and payment services gradually turns them into offline artifacts. Security is the stronger argument for Samsung's decision.

Payment systems require modern encryption, authentication and server compatibility, and maintaining obsolete software increases both engineering costs and risk. For most active Galaxy users the change will be invisible, but preservation enthusiasts and people still using older devices in developing markets may notice it immediately. Android's extraordinary hardware diversity has always been one of its strengths, but supporting that diversity indefinitely is impossible.
